Winter Camping Typical Daily Routine

Postby 92_Flagstaff » Mon Feb 01, 2010 8:38 am

Reading this site for the past three months I have been amazed at the number of you who practice what you preach. True winter warriers, out to challenge mother nature in an arm wrestle for the ultimate camping experience.

I'm not FBB's into the club yet, nor do I own a huge new TT (I have the opposite, a small pup), nor have I ever camped in the winter....BUT... thats not to say I won't ever do so.

The latest pics showing those camped out at Mac for the season, and specifically the pics from this past weekend that AN posted have me wondering what exactly a typical day in snowville would consist of? My concern lies with my wife and kids, not knowing how they would cope with camping in the winter.

I'd be very happy to hear what a "typical days schedule" looks like for those of you who winter camp. No chance I'll ever convince the DO/DD's to tag along if I cannot explain how interesting or fun it could be. KIds are 10/13 and wife's age must remain a secret for my own health reasons.

Bring on the stories. ;)

Sleep in! - The only real time I ever get to sleep in is while camping and I really take advantage of it while winter camping :D
Coffee Time - I perc my coffee so that takes a while and then a few large cups before I even think about breakfast
Breakfast - Always something hearty but not necessarily healthy ;)
Outside! - At Mac it's off for a hike/snowshoing/skating/puttering around the site/camper.
Lunch
Shopping - Mac is pretty close to Port Elgin so we usually make it into town most weekends for something or groceries.
Outside! - Your camping get out there!
Dinner - From the Grill to the Oven something warm
Campfire!

Now in-between all this is the usual stuff like watching a little Television, long weekends I let the kids bring the Xbox, movie nights, board games, home work - hey it's gotta get done, some weekends have my internet stick with me so a little browsing, napping - only get to do this camping [thumbs_up]

That's a summary and doesn't include visiting with friends and hanging around having a few pop's

I've never camped in snow or ice or blizzards,,,,but I can tell from the deck being cleared and sometimes the roof,,,some of the day consist of shoveling and or sweeping snow,,,,,,keeping your butt warm as possible,,,,enjoying a warm fire/having a few drinks looking around at what nature gives y'all on a sunny/snow day,,,,watching birds eat while ya have your morning go juice,,,(sitting around wondering what the Nancy's are doing,),,,,,,just from the pics and reading,,,it seems to me,,,they do just about the same thing as any other time,,,,but in the cold/wintery elements,,,,now this is JMVHO,, :D .,,,,,now with A_N's new TT,,he has to miss out on the fun of beating mother nature with the pipe and tank freezing issues,, 8-) ,,,,,,oh well,,,more time to watch the little birdies !!

Lots of puttering around- great time to fix and tweak things.

We also try to mix it up and plan trips with other activities in the local area. And ahhh...the campfires [thumbs_up]

Perhaps a little extra time in front of the TV more so then normal, but nothing in the sched that we wouldn't plan on doing in a normal weekend, just dress different.

Yea, it's pretty much camping like any other time just wearing a lot more clothing and never worrying about the pop's getting warm  , fact is you have to watch that your drinks don't freeze before you finish them !

You most certainly go through more wood than a typical summer trip, spend time unfreezing things, clearing snow from traffic area but yea, it's just camping :D

I guess I just like the challenge of doing it, forcing the kids and myself to get outside doing things instead of hibernating in the house. This weekend my DS was off with his Venture(Scouting) group for 3 nights of camping OUTSIDE and I'm heading off with my Scout Troop for the same thing next weekend  I also gotta "keep it real" 8-)

Great thread! How about a broader stroke of this, a typical weekend:

Friday, arrive late (as per usual) anywhere between 8-10. As soon as we arrive we often start a campfire right away so there are embers and it is warm (it takes longer to get the firepit area up to temp for an enjoyable campfire) and begin to unpack and ready the rig. De-winterize, attach tote etc and pack food in fridge. Usually have a few pops and a fireside chat with friends, turn in.

Saturday, sleep late! Brekkie, clean up. Fix anything that requires fixing, thaw anything that requires thawing ;). Outside activities throughout the day, snowshoeing, cross country, skating etc. We usually do a very light lunch. We often start dinner early as we more often than not grill and the daylight runs out quickly. After dinner we wash up and usually spend some time together reading or watching a little TV. Doing the dishes tends to take longer as we usually do most of our dishes on Saturday night to generate most of our grey water during that time. Then outside for a campfire and more fun.

Sunday is packup, dump tanks, put things away etc.

As Shum suggests you will go through way more firewood. We've went through about a bush cord already, then again a campfire is almost an every night occurence for us.

I always find the winter weekends to be more laid back then a normal summer weekend, no one seems to rush anything, and thats GREAT!
Campfires seem that much warmer at -10c :P

Yep, enjoy the tinker time when I get to fuddle about the camper, dang plastic bits don't seem to hold out so well.

You mean mousehole covers can't stand up to flying ice chunks? [rofl].

I know dump hoses can't .

I've went through about 3 dump valve covers this year so far
