battery location

Postby back40 » Thu Dec 10, 2009 10:15 pm

since agm batteries are so expensive, I would like to run (4) Crown CR-225 in parallel but these additional 240lbs plus a generator with fuel is @165lbs and an aluminum genny box @105lbs and 2 propane bottles (?) on the tongue seems like it will be too much...so I must relocate these batteries.

SInce these do produce fumes do you think they could be located under the trailer somewhere with their own vented plastic battery boxes and be ok while parked. I'm concerned about any gases being trapped under the trailer and coming up...or is that just stupid?

While it would be easy to enclose them in the front storage area, I would still need venting and I really want the weight back.

My Palomino HTT has the battery in the front storage area, It has a 1 1/2 - 2"" plastic vent hose out to the front on the trailer. The battery box has a place for this vent hose to attach to on top.

My 5'er has the same set up for the battery, as long as it is vented to the outside it should be no problem. [thumbs_up]

The gas pro9duced is hydrogen and vents very quickly. I'd go for the internal storage and then vent the battery box(s) as well.

It's surprising little amount of gas actually, BUT does require venting. Direct the vent away from any ignition source or combustion intake sources (HWH/Furnace etc....) and you'll be fine. As CRN says, his 5er has that set up as MOST of them do.

Totally agree, with proper venting this would not pose any problem. It is smart to realize just how much weight you will be adding and if by default it goes on the tongue then your tongue weight will be adversly effected.

thanks for the responses!

6v or 12v??? I know this is a hot topic on rv.net with many posts going both ways...just thought the winter crew might have a better perspective...so what do most of you run for batteries? The trojan and crown 6 volts seem popular and a good price but if I'm trying to save weight I think having (2) 12v 220amp hour true deep cycle batteries will be much lighter that (4) 6v 220 amp hour batteries to actually net me 220amp hours at 50%

If the 12v is a true deep cycle is should withstand a rare mistake of total draw down like the 6v and be able to come back?...is this true? Any other benefit of one over the other?

I had the Ortbital, 12 volt batteries total of four of them, big money too, around 1200.00, lousy performance compared to 4 6 volt Crowns. There might be other 12 volt deep cycle that are good, but I don't know of them. I figure if the 12 volts were good they would be using them in golf carts, to my knowledge they don't.

I have had my Crowns for two years now, never let me down, lots of power.
