Mini deck

Postby another_newfie » Mon Nov 16, 2009 11:12 am

DW and I have been discussing the idea of putting down a mini deck style structure on our site at MAC this winter. I did some quick measurements and a 6'X6' deck built from 2X6 would fit the bill. I would basically build a box and leave it there over the winter. Just somewhere to put our boots etc when entering the trailer as opposed to stepping on the ground. We would throw a rubber backed mat onto it for traction. In the spring when the snow melts it might help keep some of the mud out of the trailer as well. I am not talking anything fancy, just small and simple. Basically a larger step. Comments?

I've thought the same. Have some "pulled" pressure treated hanging around in the backyard if I manage to get some free time.

Good idea. however I'll throw a caveat out there and just say that PT wood gets slippery as heck when ice forms on it and has zero traction.
Of course your not allowed to use salt in the park either- not sure how much the rubber matt would aid either.

Definelty need a spot for the boots and such.....not sure the mini deck is the complete answer, but perhaps part of it.....

How about the finish you get with grit embedded in it? That might serve as a good coating to get traction.

That sounds like a great solution

I seem to recall hearing that Crappy Tire now sells some sort of eco friendly "salt" ... not salt really but does the same job, somewhat expensive at something like $10 to $15 for a jug, but probably would be a solution in this situation.

EDIT: I think this may be it ...

I wouldn't pay that much

Personally, not sure what the issue with Salt is anyway, comes from the ground, gies back into the ground....not like your useing a dump truck load.

Seem to recall the CG Host taking a header last winter....

A simple soution to a slippery deck is adding some sand to any paint or stain you going to be using on the deck. This way it is embedded right into the finish. You can also take rubber traction mats and cut them into strips and staple them into the decking material. This will allow snow/ice/sand to filter down between the slats when you kick the stuff off you boots. Most rubbler remains pretty supple as well with most of the temps that we get.

Jeeze now that I think about it I think I'm going to have to get on this project [thumbs_up]

Thanks for the post And Us, but my frugal nature would not allow me to pay that much... Yikes. However an alternative nonetheless.

I will take a look at Home Depot today while I am out and see what I find. I think this is a go for this weekend. I assemble it at home and bring it up to MAC in the truck unassembled.

We use a wood skid with a rubber backed carpet for covering, similar to those carpet you see used in stores.
