Storage shelter

Postby another_newfie » Mon Nov 16, 2009 11:10 am

I have the oppurtunity to purchase the following shelter from a close friend for a good price

http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524443298201&bmUID=1258132733030

My thought is that it will serve as a great place to store my wood, totes and other misc items at MAC this winter. I do have room for it on my site (LOVE having a large site ). Thoughts?

I personally don't think it's an issue with the room you have.

How well do you think it would handle the snow load :?:

I am concerned about snow load, but I am hoping the peeked roof along with where I will put it will help ease the load.

Someone had one last year, may have even been Scottsdale, was between Shum & I, I think....but anyway, it was tucked back in between some cedar trees and was pretty well protected.

If the price is right perhaps it doesn't matter all that much. Just yesterday I decided to erect my FirstUp shelter on my deck ... I hate having to shovel so much snow just to get to the Baby Q and to the recycle bins we stick out on the deck during the winter. I did replace the stock top fabric roof with a 12' x 14' heavy duty tarp and I think it'll probably be OK. Maybe I'll change my tune if it does collapse but the worst I'd be out is the price of a new FirstUP so I'm going to give it a go anyway. :o

I had an easy-up cheap clone collapse under a snow load a few years ago up at Pinery. Came out in the morning and it was kissing the carpet  Man I've lost about 5 of these thing to various forms of punishment by Mother Nature.

Anyway, yup that guy was actually between Frank and ourselves and it lasted all season. I think having it tucked up into the cedars really kept quite a bit of the snow load off it.

I do have a fairly protected place in mind and I think it will stand up to the snowload. I also think this one is a go

Annette uses something larger for our rabbits. Two suggestions 1) Put another tarp over it which you hold down with concrete blocks or something else really secure. 2) Coat that tarp with rain dance of something that beads up water like that as it will help the snow load slide off easier. We did the first this past winter, and will likely do the later this winter. Of course the shelter we used last year was from PA and is very strong. We purchased a 10x20 Shelter Logic this fall to store hay, lawn mowers and the like for the winter, so I guess we will see how strong it is.

I haven't read the reviews on this one, but the 10x20 one it seemed the people who had problems all neglected to sufficiently stake down the shelter. That is a rather important point unless you can keep it out of the wind completely.

Regarding tarps ... Crappy Tire sells heavy duty versions that are FAR superior than the el cheapo $10 versions ... more costly for sure but I've got several of different sizes I've been using for a number of years and these tarps are really strong, really resistant to tearing. That's what I stuck atop my FirstUp and if it does collapse I'm sure it'll be the frame not the tarp that fails.
